How to Encourage Yourself and Others to Stay Healthy During the Holiday Season

As the holiday season approaches, keeping you and your family’s health in mind is a gift that is priceless. We do not have to give up our health-related goals like exercise, eating right and taking care of ourselves just because it’s the holidays! Here are some tips and strategies that might see you through the season.

Plan out the parties. Take a monthly calendar and mark the days that holiday parties and celebrations will occur. Make good choices for food and exercise on the regular days leading up to the festivities. On the party days, get some activity in beforehand and snack on healthy foods before you go. This is a great tip for everyone in the family.

Relieve the stress. Although the holidays are a special time of celebration, they can add some stress to your life. The kids are out of school, work time is interrupted, and your daily routine is off balance. Stress can cause overeating, so taking a “time out” is important! Make time for yourself: a quiet walk around the block, a hot bath at the end of the evening, and a pedicure with a friend – things that make you happy and relaxed!

Gift ideas. The majority of the population chooses New Year’s resolutions around the idea of having a healthier lifestyle in the upcoming year. Why not give gifts that will keep your family and you moving over the winter season and support your health goals?

  • A workout membership to the local city recreation center or gym.
  • A workout DVD to play at home.
  • A pedometer to keep track of your steps.
  • A new pair of work out shoes.
  • Outside toys for kids – like a bike, skateboard or an old-fashioned jump rope!
  • What about a basketball, a soccer ball or a small trampoline to keep you active?

Kids and adults alike need to stay active during the holiday season. Not only will it help your waistline, it will help your mental outlook as well.
