Ways to Contribute to Your Child’s Learning Experience

The rate at which children learn and develop is staggering – especially in the first five years of a child’s life. Did you know that 90% of a child’s brain develops during those formative early years? While many skills will come naturally such as eating, sleeping and swallowing – your child has a lifetime of learning ahead of them, and now is the time to establish a solid foundation for them.

For the type of learning that takes intentional teaching, your child will need a structured environment with creative activities to promote critical thinking skills. Whether your child is educated primarily at home or in a preschool or daycare facility, you have an integral part to play in these early years. A formalized education is only as effective as the adults in a child’s life who are willing to also incorporate learning in a more informal, natural way during the course of the day.

Take a look at some of these tips for easily integrating learning in to your child’s day:

  • Does your child attend childcare? – Ask your child’s teachers about the topics they will be covering over the next few weeks. When you know what your child will be learning then you can always look for fun ways to keep the lessons going at home. Is your child learning Spanish? Cook some Spanish food and talk about the culture together! These types of activities that connect a child’s learning in a tangible way help a child remember and enjoy the experience.
  • Talk to your child!  – Seems like such a simple tip but if you engage your child’s mind by entering into a conversation with them, you might be surprised at the creativity and questions tucked in his/her mind. Asking open-ended questions is the best way to ensure your child will need to implement critical thinking skills. The goal is to help your child create a pattern of thinking, communicating and reasoning during normal activities and events.
  • Let your child into your every day world – If you are a working parent you obviously can’t take your child to work with you every day but you can certainly model for them a bunch of activities from which they can learn. From cooking meals to sorting the laundry, let your child observe how you do something and use it as an opportunity to explain to them why you are doing what you are doing. “We separate our white clothes from our colorful clothes so that our white clothes don’t try to become colorful ones!”

Your young child wakes up every morning and is automatically learning and growing. Chances are you may have a very curious child in your home who seems to always be asking, “Why? How? What for?” It may seem like these questions will never end but instead of getting completely exasperated with your child, choose to be thankful for their inquisitive spirit and do what you can to encourage their learning.

Infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and pre-kindergarteners have an excellent chance of thriving when their education is influenced by people who truly care for them.
