How to Make Colorful Paper Flowers for Spring

How to make Paper Flowers for a Simple

Spring Decoration

I love making tissue paper flowers, this is not a new idea but an old favorite always worth recycling. In this video, I show how to make paper flowers using recycled O Magazine pages. You can also use wrapping paper, tissue paper, crepe paper or other light weight paper that is easy to crumple and shape. I think I like making tissue paper flowers the best for their bright colors and fluffy petals but be creative and have fun. Maggie and I made the flowers in the photo above, too, in about an hour this afternoon. It’s addictive! Once you get started, you will find excuses to make more and more flowers, they are so bright and cheerful!

Here’s all you need:

Tissue paper, recycled magazine pages cut into circles or petal shapes. For younger children, use smaller circles or petals, they are easier to work with.
Green pipe cleaners
Scissors
Floral tape (optional)

Instructions:

Make a small loop on one end of the pipe cleaner.  This will keep the paper from sliding off.  Now, starting with the smaller pieces first, gently poke the pipe cleaner through the center of the paper and slide the paper up to the loop.  Continue the process working your way from the smaller pieces to the larger ones.  After every 5 pieces, scrunch the paper gently towards the loop – this will give your flower petals the blooming effect.  Of course, the more paper you put on your stem, the fuller your flower will be.

Experimentation is the key.  Circle shapes make beautiful carnation-like creations but you may want to work with other shapes as well.  Mix and match.  Crinkle the paper before you slide it on the stem.  Try lots of things and have fun with them.

The process (and product) is so easy and so much fun, you’ll accumulate 50 of them before you know it!  Not to worry.  We have suggestions for that too…

  • These make a lovely teacher gift for Teacher Appreciation week.
