DALLAS STUDENT WINS $1,000 LITERACY GRANT FOR BYAN’S HOUSE
Borden Milk and Reading Is Fundamental Announce Winners of Children’s Art Contest
Dallas, TX (Sept. 16, 2010) – Borden Milk and Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF) are pleased to announce the winners of “Elsie the Cow’s Reading Adventures” Art Contest. As part of a multi-year commitment to support children’s literacy, Borden and RIF teamed up to promote the joy of reading for local Dallas children, as well as eight other cities throughout Texas and Louisiana, and help encourage families to fuel up for learning at back to school time.
As the Dallas winner, Grace Zamora selected Bryan’s House – a special-care facility in Dallas for children affected by HIV or AIDS – to receive a $1,000 literacy grant. The center will use the grant to purchase books, reading materials or host reading events for local children. Grace also receives a personal prize package, including a year’s supply of fresh, local and great-tasting Borden Milk, a $50 book-retailer gift card, Borden T-shirt, Elsie the Cow stickers, Borden pencils, Borden growth chart and a personalized certificate from RIF.
“Reading Is Fundamental recognizes the importance of providing children access to books as a way to empower students to be successful in school and life,” said Carol H. Rasco, RIF president and CEO. “Through our partnership with Borden Milk, we are pleased to provide these literacy grants to supply needed books and reading materials to children in Texas and Louisiana.”
Entrants ages 6-12 submitted original drawings inspired by the theme “Elsie the Cow’s Reading Adventures.” The numerous submissions conveyed the joy of reading and included images of books, milk and Elsie the Cow. Borden Milk and RIF also selected winners in these Texas markets: Austin, Corpus Christi, Houston, Laredo, McAllen, San Antonio, and Texarkana as well Baton Rouge, La.
“It’s extremely important to Borden Milk that kids are equipped with the right materials to learn—these includes essential nutrients and great books,” said Rick Beaman, president for Borden. “We are excited to join RIF to give back to the Dallas community, and congratulate all of our winners across Texas and Louisiana.”
