Beauty and The Beast - Dallas Children's Theater

A visually thrilling production featuring breathtaking magic of black theater puppetry

Adventure, romance, mystery and magic come to life on stage in Kathy Burks Theatre of Puppetry Arts’all new and original adaptation of the beloved classic novel Beauty and The Beast, playing March 7 – 30, 2014 at Dallas Children’s Theater. Enjoyed by ages 5 and up.

In order to save her father’s life, a beautiful young girl leaves home to keep a promise and live with a terrible, frightening beast. Though the creature is hideous, his disarming generosity and kindness slowly leads to a surprising relationship of mutual respect and devotion. Despite Beauty’s dream of meeting and marrying a handsome prince, she grows to love the fearsome beast by looking past his outward appearance and learning to see his true nature of goodness, generosity, and intelligence.

Director Douglass Burks says, “Beauty and The Beast is a compelling story with a powerful lesson on the importance of looking at a person’s inside before judging them on their outward appearance. It is a timeless tale that is as relevant today as it was when it was first written. Beauty and The Beast provides a perfect introduction to this classic story but also promises to captivate the attention of older audience members as well”.

Two styles of puppetry, shadow puppets and Black Theatre rod puppets, combine to create an exciting new world for Beauty and The Beast. Black Theatre is a form of puppetry originating in Europe in which puppets perform in a stream of light with the puppeteers rendered invisible through the use of black robes, hoods and gloves.  The Black Theatre rod puppets move without strings or any visible means of manipulation creating a dramatic, magical effect.
