Kohl's Cash

Remembering to use your Kohl’s Cash

by Lorraine Brock

This month, I going to help you remember to use your Kohl’s Cash® before it expires. As a Professional Organizer, I have seen so many misplaced, expired, or forgotten Kohl’s Cash® coupons in piles of paper, drawers, or on kitchen counters where they were left after a shopping trip. How many of you leave the coupons in the Kohl’s plastic bags when you unload your purchases? It’s a waste and I hate waste.

It’s not enough to put the coupons in your purse or stick them on the refrigerator and hope that you remember to use them during the designated time frame. Let’s think about the most recent BIG shopping trip that most of us had this summer. During back-to-school shopping you can easily spend $200 and walk away with $40 in Kohl’s Cash. In the moment it is very exciting to imagine spending the free cash, and you make plans to return again to shop during the listed date range. Once the coupon is in your purse, the memory fades….

I am often tempted to stand outside the store and ask people if they will take .50 on the dollar for their Kohl’s Cash. They get cash value and I use the coupon at full value. I am joking of course, but my point is that most people would rather take the cash because they realize that they may not remember to use it.

As a Professional Organizer, I had to come up with a plan to successfully redeem my own Kohl’s Cash coupons before I could make suggestions to our clients. There are two parts to the process: deciding where to store the coupons, and remembering to use them by a specific date. Let’s talk first about finding the best place to keep the Kohl’s Cash.

Kohl’s Cash Available Online and In-Store

Kohl’s Cash can be earned through online and in-store purchases. The online type is much easier to keep track of. You can print a copy to take to the store, and if you lose it, print it again. You can also take your smart phone to the store and show them the bar code on your mobile device from your email.

Storing Your Kohl’s Cash

Managing the coupons you receive at the store is a bit trickier. I suggest you clean your purse out every night. Take out loose items like receipts or trash you no longer need. For small items, cards, or coupons that you carry with you at all times, use a cosmetics bag or wallet. You can have a bag you store receipts in or a bag that holds tissues, cough drops, etc. Place the Kohl’s Cash in one of these bags or put them in your wallet so you see it when you reach for your credit card or checkbook.

Other storage options are a Tickler File, Card/Coupon Cubbies, or a thin accordion file with sections labelled for restaurants, shopping, entertainment, kids, etc. Place the Kohl’s Cash in the section labeled shopping. The key to this strategy is keeping the file in your car so you have it when you go shopping.

Card Cubbies are very trendy and have stylish colors and patterns. They come in the “card” size for business cards, gift cards, store rewards cards, or punch cards and includes an A-Z index file. The larger “coupon” size has an index for the categories of food and products in a grocery store. Either size fits nicely in a purse or the console or glove compartment of your car. Put your Kohl’s Cash under the “K” and if it stays in your purse, you will have it when you go shopping.

Remembering to Use Your Kohl’s Cash in Time

Now to solve the problem of remembering to use the Kohl’s coupons before they expire. Before you put them away for safe-keeping, check your calendar for a good shopping day in the range listed on the coupon. Pick a day and schedule your shopping trip. Store the coupons in the products I mentioned, or put them in your Tickler File. If you do not plan ahead, the dates will come and go and you will lose the opportunity to make a “free” purchase. Give yourself plenty of time to browse for just the right items. When you become really organized with your coupons and scheduling, you can even spread out your purchases so you are not just picking up things you do not need.

Keeping your Kohl’s Cash or any other type of discount card or coupon in an organized place, and scheduling the days you will use them on your calendar or smart phone may seem like a lot of work, but it’s these simple steps that will get you the results you want.
