For Moms: How to Bond with Your Tween Daughter

Bonding Over Beauty book encourages mother daughter relationships

Over the long weekend I made some time to sit down with a great new book, Bonding Over Beauty: A Mother-Daughter Beauty Guide to Foster Self-Esteem, Confidence and Trust, by Erika Katz. As the mother of an almost 11-year-old daughter, I am always looking for new ways to stay connected to my tween daughter and ways to talk to her about all the changes she is about to experience in her body.

My tween daughter is a typical 10-year-old who loves to look at herself in the mirror, paint her nails and wear pretty clothes. She is wearing a sports bra and deodorant. She is nervous about what will happen if she starts her period at school. The normal concerns of a girl her age. I love that she talks to me about everything and I want to make sure she continues to trust me and tell me “everything!”

Erika Katz’ book is full of great tips and ideas on everything from teaching your daughter how to take care of her hair to conversations about starting her period, body odor and drinking enough water. As a mom, model and beauty expert, Katz offers great insights and details on bonding over beauty. She includes specific ideas at the end of each chapter for activities, outings and time spent with your daughter. I highly recommend this book to any mother of a daughter, especially if you are uncomfortable talking to your daughter about her body and what to expect.

Here is one of Katz’ homemade beauty recipes for a DIY Lavender Bath Bomb:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup citric acid
  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 10-20 Drops of Lavender Oil
  • 1 tbsp Almond Oil
  • 1/4 tsp Water
  • 5 drops purple food coloring  (optional)

Steps

  • Mix together citric acid and baking soda in a bowl
  • Add Lavender Oil and Almond Oil (food coloring if you desire)
  • Spray a small amount of water at a time into the mixture, so that it becomes crumbly but still hold its shape
  •
Pack the mixture tightly into your mold and let it dry in a warm dark place
