Healthy Alternatives to Trick-or-Treat Standards

Boo! It is time for Halloween.
My kids always look forward to this special day. They wait for it every year, planning and plotting their Halloween costume, decorating the house and yard, hoping to scare their friends that stop by!
The great thing is that you can have a wonderful time at Halloween, enjoying your family traditions, without all the sugary sweet, cavity inducing, and hyperactivity stimulating candy. Try focusing on the festivities and fun, and maybe not so much the treats.
As parents, we have become more aware of the dangers of too much of a “good thing”, so here are a few tips I would like to share:
Swapping Out Halloween Candy
Instead of candy, a few more healthy alternative choices are:
Small, inexpensive toys or stickers
Pens, pens, erasers, little note pads
Mini box of raisins
Bag of pretzels
Bag of dry fruit
Cheese sticks (depends on where you are)
Healthy granola bar – not all of these are good, watch out for high sugar, calories and fat
Don’t spoil all the fun; do have some choices around candy, just limit the intake.
Ideas for healthy intake:
2 pieces of candy per age of child to keep, child 5 X 2 pieces = 10 to keep
Using smaller bags so they fill up easily
Let them pick out a set amount of the loot and give away the rest
Set amount they eat during the week after, throwing away or giving away the rest
5 tricks or treats with pumpkins
Try baking pumpkins seeds for a tasty and nutritious snack alternative to nuts. They are a natural source of carbohydrates, amino acids and unsaturated fatty acids. They are also a good source of fibre, vitamins and minerals.
Chop chunks of pumpkin and bake in the oven for a delicious accompaniment to dinners.
Make a medley mash of pumpkin, sweet potato, rutabaga and turnip as a delicious side.
Cook pumpkin with stock, onions, garlic and seasoning and blend into a delicious warming Halloween soup to keep little monsters satisfied.
Mix bite-size pieces of pumpkin with butternut squash and peas to make a tasty risotto.
