Helping Your Child Appreciate Cultural Differences

Children have a universal language of love, laughter, and acceptance. It doesn’t matter what culture they represent, the common denominator in the heart of a child is the desire to enjoy a loving, nurturing and supportive environment.

Even when parents are not accustomed to spending time with different cultures, for children it doesn’t make a difference. As long as children are having fun, and being treated kindly, the difference in appearance is not important. Here are some ways that parents can help support their child’s appreciation for different cultures.

  • Be sure to expose your child to different cultures through friendships, holidays, music, and other aspects of ethnicity that your family and child can enjoy.
  • Help your child understand that everyone is different in very special ways. Teach your child to celebrate the differences and treat others with the love and respect that your family enjoys.
  • Be careful about making comments at home that support a lack of cultural understanding. Seek to be better informed and teach your child as well.
  • Enjoy the fun and benefits of other cultures. Experience different foods, music, etc.
  • Remind your child that your family is also different to someone else.
  • When you are not sure about how to interact with another culture, seek to learn the values of the culture and share with your family. Always interact with kindness and acceptance.

As a parent, it’s important to help your child learn to respect people even when they are different from what the child normally sees. Cultural understanding will be a great social skill that benefits your child now and in the future.
