Ideas for Helping Others During the Holidays

As the holidays approach, parents are busy planning for the time off, meals, and fun. Families are thinking about how to spend their time. Most families enjoy an array of delicious food with choices like turkey or ham (or both), cake or pie, stuffing, rolls, etc. For other families, there may not be as many choices because personal challenges have limited their ability and opportunities for holiday fun.

It’s not unusual for people to find themselves in difficult situations during the holidays. They may be unable to meet their child’s holiday wishes or purchase the food the family enjoys. Some people have lost loved ones and feel alone during the holidays. Others have physical and financial challenges. Whatever the challenge, the holidays offer an excellent opportunity for families to extend joy, gladness, and smiling faces to others who are less fortunate.

Here are some thoughtful ideas for how your family can help others during the holidays:

  • Help your children bake cookies for a group of people that you know.
  • Do you know someone who is between jobs? They may be on a strict budget and would appreciate an invitation to join you for dinner.
  • Consider brightening up the day of an elderly person with a visit and tasty dish.
  • Check for organizations that feed the homeless and volunteer to help.
  • Purchase blankets and donate them to a shelter.
  • Do you know anyone in the hospital? Take your family for a visit and share a gift.
  • Adopt a family. If you know a family in need with several young children purchase gifts for the family and toys for the children.
  • While shopping for your meal, purchase extra items and make a donation to your local food pantry.
  • When you shop for gifts, purchase something extra and give to someone who would least expect it.
  • Consider your child’s friends. Is there a child who lacks resources? Talk to the parents or guardian and find out what you can do to help. You can also talk to the teachers and staff and your school to see if they can recommend a family that would appreciate your assistance, even if it is anonymous.
  • Donate some of your gently used winter clothes (or you can purchase new items) to a shelter.

With so many ways to help people in need, you can select the activity that is most suitable for your family. Don’t forget to consider family and friends in your close circles. They may be hurting and need your help, but would never ask.
