Life-sized Gingerbread House

Great Wolf Lodge is busy building it’s annual Snowland and a family-adventure with a heart of it’s own!

When most people think of Great Wolf Lodge, they think water parks and swim suits. That’s true year round but this winter Great Wolf Lodge is offering so much more! Every December Great Wolf Lodge transforms into a winter wonderland complete with daily snow showers in the Grand Lobby and fun-filled holiday activities for the entire family throughout the month of December.

What’s really special about this year’s snowland is the addition of life-sized Gingerbread Houses. The Gingerbread Houses will be big enough to accommodate a group of six people for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Proceeds from these special seatings will be donated to Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Great Wolf Lodge’s charity of choice.

Great Wolf LodgeI had the pleasure of speaking with Chef Nick Baker recently about the construction of the Gingerbread Houses currently being constructed in Grapevine.

I asked him what the biggest challenge related to the construction of the Gingerbread houses is and he laughed. He said that understanding how much product to purchase and have on hand was a huge challenge and they were constantly having to buy more powdered sugar to make the royal icing. Aside from the inner construction and support, the entire house is made of edible materials. Check out this list of materials required for the construction.

The life-sized Gingerbread Houses will measure approximately 10 feet by 12 feet, take up to 437 hours to complete, and contain the following ingredients:

  • 3,240 Eggs
  • 1,320 pounds of Sugar
  • 750 Christmas Cookies
  • 600 pounds of Gingerbread Dough
  • 100 pounds of Chocolate
  • 500 Holly Leaves
  • 2,000 Blue Chocolate Wafers
  • 2,000 Green Chocolate Wafers
  • 4,900 Pretzel Rods
  • 5,000 Christmas candies
  • 750 Candy Wreaths
  • 1,000 Candy Canes

I also asked Chef Baker what was the best part of the process and he said that seeing the creativity of the designers, other chefs and decorators was amazing. He brought his 11-year old daughter to Great Wolf for a sneak peak and was thrilled with her reaction. He cannot wait to see all the delighted faces when the Gingerbread Houses and Snowland open to the public on December 3.

The official Snowland festivities begin with the tree lighting in the Grand Lobby on Saturday, December 3, including a special appearance by Santa Claus himself.
Great Wolf Lodge guests who visit Snowland can soak up the splendor of the season with caroling, holiday-themed Cub Club activities in North Pole University and gorgeous winter decorations – in addition to splashing around the 84-degree, indoor waterpark.

Snowland runs from December 3 through December 25, and guests will delight in these family-friendly activities:

• Writing letters to Santa Claus at the Writing Depot
• Participating in holiday-themed crafts in Santa’s Workshop
