Summer vacation is looming in the not too far distance. Keep your kids reading all summer long with these great summer reading programs and challenges.

Allen Public Library Summer Reading Club

May 30th – August 11th

It’s Allen Public Library’s 50th birthday! Celebrate with us this summer! Come to the library, get a reading log, and read your way toward some cool prizes. Choose to read 25 books or for 25 hours; for ages 0 – 11. Get more info and sign up.

Barnes & Noble Summer Reading for Kids

May 6th – September 5th

The Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program is here to help you on your way, encouraging you to read books of your own choosing and earn a FREE book, simply by following these three easy steps:

1. Read any eight books this summer and record them in your Summer Reading Journal and tell us which part of the book is your favorite, and why.
2. Bring your completed journal to a Barnes & Noble store between May 16th and September 5th, 2017.
3. Choose your FREE reading adventure from the book list featured on the back of the journal.

The Colony Public Library Summer Reading Program

The Colony Public Library offers reading clubs for preschool, elementary school, teens, and adults. Online book logging is June 6 through July 28.  Get the details.

Dallas Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge

June 3rd – August 12th

Kids ages 0 to 18: read or be read to at least 20 minutes a day. Ebooks and audiobooks count, but video games and websites do not!

After logging 10 days of reading, kids earn the free book of their choice PLUS a pass or coupon to events and attractions to make the summer even more fun! Get more info.

Half Price Books – Feed Your Brain Summer Reading Program

June and July for kids age 14 and under

Kids age 14 and under can earn bookworm bucks in June and July. (Grown-ups may read aloud to kids who are still learning.) Download the reading log, add up your minutes and have your parent or guardian initial each week. Once you’ve reached 300 or more minutes, bring your log to your local HPB to claim your Bookworm Bucks on or before August 31, 2017. Get the details.

University Park Public Library Summer Reading

June 4th – July 30th

This summer’s UP With Reading theme is “Take a Magic Carpet Ride.” Each registered participant will be given a magic carpet to decorate and display in the library.  Each  participant will also be given a button to wear when they come to the library. Whenever a participant reads for five hours or reads five books they will be given a sticker to decorate their button.

Prizes will be awarded for special achievements:
  • A yard sign for each child who reads 10 hours
  • A book for each child who reads 25 hours

The HPISD school whose students collectively read the most hours will be awarded the Readers Cup trophy. Hyer Elementary School is the current champion. Visit the sign up page.
