Music & Cooler Temperatures Make Running Easier

My new routine, as I throw myself into half marathon training again, after three years of doing almost no running, is to get kids fed, help my husband make lunches and then head out the door by about 7:15. My husband and daughter wave as they pass me on their way to school. I wave back and keep slogging slowly along at what feel’s like a snail’s pace. The music and cooler temperatures help a little bit.

I am ready for cooler temperatures. The mornings have been beautiful but I love to run when it is the low 50s. I knocked a minute per mile off my pace this morning, wahoo, in part thanks to cooler weather and getting back into running.  But I am still much slower than I was in 2007. I am also about 10 pounds heavier and not in the same running shape I was then. I share all this not so that you will feel sorry for me but maybe you will empathize with how often in our lives we stop doing something we love, let excuses get in the way and then at some point get re-motivated to begin again. This is true for me with me weight loss challenges, parenting challenges and other areas of my life. I get stuck in ruts, get off track, let things slide and then go, OMG, how did that happen? Has that ever happened to you?

For my husband and I this year, our life at home, at work and as a couple and family has been about getting back onto the right track and staying there. He completed his first triathlon this past Sunday and I am so proud of him! What an accomplishment!

I realized that while running is a difficult physical challenge for me, I will never be a lightweight gazelle like some of the champion marathoners out there and I don’t need to be, I am up for it. What I love is how running makes me feel after the fact. I feel energized, I get huge bursts of creative ideas for my writing and my business while I am out there. I love running alone, but even more I love running with my husband. It is time alone together to talk, work things out, celebrate and just share the same space for a little while.  I love running in the fall when it is so gorgeous here in North Texas. And of course, it makes me feel better about my body, my ability to meet life head on and I feel like I am modeling a fit lifestyle for my kids. I look forward to the day when we all run a half marathon together. How cool will that be?

I did realize this morning that I definitely need some new music. I like all kinds of of music but I need some more upbeat playlists on my iPhone, time to get creative with the Genius list, one of my favorite iTunes features. I would love some suggestions from other running or dancing fans out there for some high energy, fun and motivational music to listen to. Music makes the time and my legs go faster. I forget sometimes when I get busy how much I love music and how good it makes me feel.

Brad and I will be participating in the Dallas White Rock Half Marathon in December. Anyone else running?
