November Non-Profit Spotlight: Sarah Morris, Founder of This Side Up Family Fun Center

Submitted by on November 10, 2011 – 11:01 am4 Comments

Throughout the month of November, North Texas Kids will spotlight local non-profit organizations and the people behind them in our e-newsletter. This week, we are getting to know Sarah Morris, Founding Director at  This Side UP Family Fun Center.Sarah Morris, This Side Up Family Fun Center

Why did you start This Side Up! Family? In a community with amazing opportunities for our children, wonderful Centers for EVERYTHING under the sun, from Sports to Theater to Music and so on, we were missing a Center focused on THE MOST IMPORTANT contributor to our children’s SUCCESS – a strong family! That needed to change so we opened This Side UP! Family Center!!

Families today are struggling just to survive. Social, economic and time pressures have robbed parents of the ability to slow down and invest the time needed to create healthy relationships with each other and their children. This missing foundation of “intentional quality” family time has huge implications for children, marriages and the community at large. In just the past 30 years, the divorce rate has more than doubled, teenage suicide has increased almost 300%, illegitimate birth rates have increased more than 400%, and one-fourth of all adolescents contract an STD before they graduate from high school*.

There is hope! At This Side Up! Family Center, we believe that every family can move from barely surviving to having a thriving family life with thought, care and action. In thriving families parents take an active role in the family’s well-being and seek the know-how to deal with what each stage of life brings. Thriving families spend time together, affirming each other and giving back to their communities, establishing a firm foundation of happiness and success that impacts future generations.

Parenting, marriage and family time can (and should) be PROACTIVE — and tons of FUN!!! Embracing this concept will truly change the life of your family! And if enough families take this seriously, the world will be changed!!!

What is the mission of This Side Up?  The mission of This Side UP! Family is moving families from surviving to THRIVING through Family Connection Nights, Parenting Education and At-Home Values Tools. Our Core Values are: Provide Affordable FUN, Cultivate strong relationships, Encourage diverse community, Equip Families and Champion Family Values.

This Side Up! Family Center is a new non-profit (opened in January 2011) which provides a safe, family- friendly environment while giving parents all the tools, skills and quality activities they need to move their families from surviving to thriving! Weekend activities like movie nights, live entertainment and parent/child date nights provide fun together time, always including an opportunity for parents to teach kids about a value and sending them home with ways to build on values in their home. During the week, parenting education, coffee talks, book clubs and marriage enrichment nights offer opportunities for parents to learn from both the best outside resources and from the experiences of other parents. The 8500+ sq. foot FUN Center has a large family entertainment area where families talk and learn together at tables, plus a snack bar, childcare room, parent education rooms, book and resource center, and more!
