Kathy Burks Celebrates 40th Season of Puppetry Arts this Friday with Rumpelstiltskin!

Rumpelstiltskin Performance Dates

Kathy Burks and Company spin pure gold as they bring their delightful Brothers Grimm tale to life for Dallas Children’s Theater (DCT) and celebrate 40 seasons as a professional troupe.  Dallas Children’s Theater presents Rumpelstiltskin by Kathy Burks Theatre of Puppetry Arts playing March 8 – April 7, 2013 at DCT’s Rosewood Center for Family Arts.

They’ll all live happily ever after if the miller’s daughter can only guess that strange little man’s name!  Filled with music, special effects and suspense, Rumpelstiltskin is classic Brothers Grimm.  “There’s a savvy heroine looking for a solution to an impossible situation, not to mention a good dose of music and magic,” Burks says.  “These fairy tale elements translate perfectly to the realm of puppetry to capture fantasy and imagination,” she adds.  Rumpelstiltskin is a faithful adaptation of the tale and an enchanting introduction to the story for young audiences.

Kathy Burks Theatre of Puppetry Arts first presented a marionette production of Rumpelstiltskin early in the troupe’s 40-year history.  In 1995 the company transformed the show to Black Theatre for the Fringe Festival in Chicago.  DCT presented the show in 2004, and is proud to return the production in 2013 for a new generation of fans.  The play features a cast of rod puppets handcrafted by Ms. Burks and her troupe, except for one grinning cat that is an antique from the Sue Hastings collection.

Show Synopsis

Deep within the woods of Germany, a poor miller boasts that his daughter Liesl can spin straw into gold.  When the king learns of this extraordinary talent, he procures her into his service.  Liesl is fearful of the consequences if she is unable to fulfill this impossible task when a mysterious little man arrives to “save the day.”  He spins the straw into gold for her – in exchange for a terrible promise.  When he holds her to her word she must break the spell, which can only be lifted if she can guess his name.  Can she solve the riddle before it’s too late?

Rumpelstiltskin promises to be an enriching visit to the theater – a gold rush not to be missed!  Enjoyed by ages 4 and above.
