Survey shows Moms do more present buying than dads

Present-ential: 42% of Dads Leave All Children’s Present Buying to Moms

A survey by a leading coupon brand has revealed that Moms are the principle present buyer for children, with Dads taking a back seat when it comes to purchasing gifts for their kids. Findings show that the average American father ‘never’ buys his children a birthday or Christmas gift, leaving the duty to the Mom of the house.

A leading coupon brand conducted a survey to uncover the politics of gift buying in the average American family, which has seen an increase in solo-parent gift buying.

The survey, conducted by www.vouchercloud.net, quizzed American parents to find out more about gift-buying habits, after finding that more moms than dads search for coupon codes to be used when purchasing gifts. 2,519 US parents took part in the study, with an equal split between mothers and fathers, all of whom had children that were at least five years old.

Respondents were then asked about their gift-buying split, specifically ‘who does the shopping for your children’s Christmas and birthday gifts?’ Almost three quarters of respondents (68%) claimed that the Mom did the gift shopping on her own, whilst a minimal amount of respondents (11%) revealed that the Dad did the gift shopping by himself. The remaining 21% of parents claimed that they did their gift shopping together.

Respondents were asked to reveal the reason why mothers gift-shopped on their own, with the top 5 most popular reasons revealed as:

  1. Mom prefers to shop on her own – 69%
  2. Dad is not trusted to buy the right thing – 63%
  3. Dad doesn’t know what the kids like – 51%
  4. Dad constantly moans whilst shopping – 46%
  5. Dad is too stingy whilst shopping – 32%

Wanting to delve a little deeper, respondents were then asked ‘has Dad ever bought a birthday or Christmas present for your children on his own?’ A majority of respondents (42%) claimed that Dads had never bought their children a birthday or Christmas present. Only 8% of Dads regularly buy their children presents on their own.

Respondents were then split into moms and dads, and were asked to reveal their ideal budget for children’s birthday and Christmas presents. The results showed that Moms are the biggest spenders, with 51% of female respondents revealing they would ideally spend $200 on each child for Christmas and birthdays. Dads were a bit more careful with their cash, with 44% of male respondents preferring to spend only $50 on their children on special occasions.

The respondents were then asked to disclose their preferred shopping method when buying gifts for the kids. A majority of Moms (78%) revealed that they prefer to shop in-person, with only 22% of respondents favoring online shopping. Male respondent’s revealed that their shopping methods contrast, with a majority of 84% favoring online shopping, with only 16% of respondents favoring to shop in person.
