2018 Top Ten Organizing Products

Happy 2018! It is yet another year to try to get organized in your home and with your life. Organizing your home often takes the purchase of products such as containers, bins, and baskets. Products serve to maximize space, containerize items, and give a cluttered area a polished look.

When deciding on a product purchase, we all love to read the reviews of others, or get a recommendation from someone we trust before buying it. To help guide you as the new year begins, I have asked for recommendations from our Get Organized! professional organizers and our staff members. Some of the products mentioned may not be an actual container, but could aid you in getting organized. I will share my favorite organizing tools also.

Our organizer, Jennifer, always has a smile and is known for finding new products to make a space function better. She said, “New favorite product! These white bins are so versatile. They can be used in pantries, bathrooms, cabinets, closets, kid’s spaces, etc. The cost is minimal, ranging from $1.99-$5.99, depending on the size. They are available at The Container Store, and with their great customer service and product availability, you are in and out quickly.” A similar stackable bin is available at IKEA though the ones at The Container Store have more size options.

“This year has been fun, and I have used a lot of different products,” says Jeanice, who covers our Ft. Worth area. Jeanice cannot only organize, but she is our Mrs. Handy Girl.  “I have to say my personal favorite product I used in my own home is the new Décor Elfa craft room shelving and utility door-wall rack solution from The Container Store. The shelving is so lightweight and easy to carry it was a breeze to transport. The weight it holds is amazing and it is easy to install.”

“The utility door solution is so versatile it can be used in office, bedroom, kitchen, or craft room. Having the peg board helps with hanging items, and the baskets offer flexibility for storing different sized items. I love that you can choose the number of baskets and sizes depending on the items you are containing. You can also make this into a wrapping station. Once installed, it is secure and doesn’t move around when opening the door.”

“It is so easy to measure your space and decide what units and shelves you like. Talk to an Elfa Specialist at The Container Store and they make it all happen. I installed mine in my office and added two door organizers to assist with overflow of office supplies. My room was completely transformed! Oh, and it is 30% off now too.”

Metro shelving is a product our organizer, Kym, loves. While you can get off brands like these shelves elsewhere, keep in mind the quality and the weight each shelf will hold may be different. Metro-type shelving can go just about anywhere, but most commonly they are used in a garage. Uline is a place where you can see all different sizes, as well as The Container Store.

One of the off brands is at Target called Room Essentials. Compare and see for yourself. Target also has a few accessories (drawer, basket) that go onto the shelf to help maximize space and hold other items. You can also get S hooks to put on any Metro-type shelf to hold yard tools, swim bags, grill items, and more.

Benita, the tallest of our organizers, chimes in with an unexpected product – a step stool. Keeping a steep stool in a closet is often overlooked when organizing your closet. Who wants to keep moving a step stool all over the house when you need it. It is better to make a permanent space in your closet for a step stool for tall storage. Benita has another idea. “Oftentimes I must sit to do tasks to keep myself from hunching over for long periods of time. This little guy is perfect to keep me low to the floor without having to sit directly on the floor. I keep three of these scattered around my home. The beauty of this one is it sustains 400 lbs. of weight. You can find less costly ones, but they do not hold the same weight.”

Pat, our organizer with an interior design degree, says she really likes the white stackable shoe shelf from Target. “It is easy to assemble, holds 12-15 pairs of women’s shoes, 10-12 men’s shoes and more children’s shoes. It’s sturdy and a great price at $13.99! It can also be used in other areas such as closets, kitchen pantries, etc. because of its size. It also comes in a black/brown finish.”

My Executive Assistant, Dana, is a very organized person and often shares with us her favorite organizing tools. “The IKEA Trones shoe/storage cabinet is with the shoe storage products in the store, but honestly it has many uses. It comes in a package of three bins and can be wall mounted in a small, narrow space, side by side, 2 across and 1 up, or 3 high, leaving floor space free. It can also be set on the floor and anchored to the wall for safety. I have moved this product to multiple homes and currently use it as follows in my apartment: the top shelf is used for my seasonal décor to welcome guests, and the top bin has items ready to go out the door with me to return or share with family or friends. The second bin has towels, gloves, and other small items for my fitness classes, and the third bin stores my flip flops and flats. The cabinet is in the foyer by my main door and makes for a quick exit to my car. This is the most versatile organizing product I have purchased in years.”

One of our Client Managers, Tori, has a Kindergartener who needs Lego storage. “I love Trofast for Legos!” said Tori. IKEA has many different combinations with their line of Trofast products. They are often used in kid’s rooms, play rooms, dorms, craft rooms and offices. The inserts come in different solid colors and are also priced separately.

Finally, it’s time to share my favorite organizing product this year. I pride myself in finding unusual products, and this one is a multipurpose product to help those who need visual cues.  Crayola Window Crayons or Chalktastic Chalk Markers both work about the same. Use them to write reminders on windows or mirrors. Help kids with a few morning reminders on the bathroom mirror. Plan your weekly menu on a kitchen window for all to see. These will get the job done. Outside of helping you stay organized, they are just fun to use. Write love notes to your honey, Happy Birthday greetings, or Bible verses for the family to memorize.

With a company full of great organizers, we get excited about boxes and containers and often email each other during the year when we have found a new product that makes us giddy. As you get organized this month during National Get Organized Month, our team wishes you a very happy new year as you consider any of these products tried and tested by our team. Now go get organized!
