Vann Counseling and Associates
Lori Vann’s philosophy is that quality mental health care should not be a luxury item and that it should be available to those who need & seek it. The counselors in her office, who are under her direct supervision, are able to provide lower cost, affordable counseling. Since they do case consults on a weekly basis with Ms. Vann, it is like having two counselors for the price of one. Her interns come from diverse backgrounds and the following languages are available: English, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Malay, and Gujurati.
Based upon her almost 15 years of counseling experience and several years of being a professor of psychology, Ms. Vann emphasizes the mind-body connection. She has found that you cannot separate mental health from physical health and vice versa, therefore mental health care is just as important as physical health care. The counselors in her practice assist clients in understanding how stress affects the mind, and thus may contribute to mental health issues and possible physical ailments while also assisting clients in identifying healthy vs. unhealthy coping skills. One focus of treatment is assessing for possible boundary issues, whether in personal or professional life. Ms. Vann has found that difficulties in boundary setting appear to be correlated with contributing to mental health concerns.
While Ms. Vann works with a wide variety of mental health problems and diagnoses, her area of expertise is self-injury. She has been nicknamed the “guru of self-injury” and the “local expert” on the topic. Having studied and worked with over 275 injurers since 1999, Ms. Vann has been interviewed by CBS 11 News, CW33 News, Hollywoodlife.com numerous times, in addition to other radio stations and print media, regarding the topic of self-injury. In 2009, she started a self-injury support group for teen girls which was then followed by a group for women who injure. Her interns are trained to work with those who injure and also assist her in running the groups. Throughout the year, the counselors will put together other support groups or day camps for a specific population or issue.
Vann Counseling has four different components: counseling, professional speaking, mental health media consulting & peer consultations, and LPC intern supervision.
Lori Vann has been a professional speaker since 2000 and has been asked to speak at state conferences, churches, symposiums, colleges, luncheons, and retreats. Currently, she has two DVDs and several CDs that are available for purchase. She has a passion for speaking and educating the public on a variety of issues that range from Dating 101 basics to self-injury education and treatment, Stress Management from a Christian Perspective, Boundaries in the Workplace, At Risk Youth Behaviors, and perfectionism. Often times, the interns participate in the seminars.
Conveniently located in North Carrollton off of Highway 121, Vann Counseling and Associates was opened in June 2010 as part of Lori Vann Counseling, Speaking, Consulting, and Supervision that opened in 2008. Ms. Vann opened the second office as a way to continue to serve the community’s mental health needs.
