We recently took a trip to California, took a great road trip across the state, visiting (& eating our way through) Sequoia National Forest, San Francisco, Half Moon Bay, Monterrey Aquarium, and then drove back down to Southern California to Disneyland, then Legoland, then relaxed at Laguna Beach our last day. All within 6 days! Whirlwind but it was one of our best adventures yet!

My kids are 11, 8, 5, and 19 months. Our favorite summer memory is visiting family on the central California coast during a local festival week. My children helped to decorate a float for the big parade, and subsequently watched that float coming down main street during the parade. My eldest child entered her very own creation in the flower arrangement competition and she won first place in the junior division. An unforgettable time together!

  • Roxanne Penz says:

My children are 5 and 7. I was very pregnant with my daughter when we visited my in-laws who live on the East Coast. My mother had joined us on the visit. My husband, mother, son, and I visited a beautiful beach with a very strong undertow. My mother, who is 5’4″ and round had ventured out a bit too far and was knocked off her feet. She was screaming for assistance. I waddled over to help her get upright and manged to also get tipped over. Here we were two round ladies being carried off by the waves. My husband who had brought his camera gear was quite oblivious of our situation. Finally, he heard us. Then he stood trying to decide what to do with his expensive camera gear. Finally, he ran away from us up the beach to gingerly place his gear on the towel, ever so gently covering it up to protect it from blowing sand. Then he ran out to save two round objects from the water. I teased him for the rest of the trip about the order of importance in our ranking. I understood but enjoyed the laugh.

My daughters are 11 and 4. Best summer memory has been a 4 generation camping and rafting trip in Oklahoma. Great-grandmother, parents, cousins, brothers and me and my husband and our daughters. We all coasted down the (lazy)river and stopped periodically to picnic on the embankments. Then we pitched tents and bbq’d at a campsite. Add in a community volleyball game! So much family fun.

My son is 7-years-old. Our favorite summer memory is from 2010. We visited every waterpark within 50 miles of our house. We took coolers full of snacks, stayed from early morning until evening, and we had a blast. We cherish the memories. My son was only 4, but he really thought he could swim with the smooth currents in the lazy river and with his life jacket on.

My son is 9 and since I am a stay ay home parent resigned from teaching elementary school and my husband lost his job things have to be super simple for us but we still manage to make some great summer memories! Chasing lightening bugs, going on bike rides or walks to our local neighborhood lake to feed the ducks and turtles, playing baseball, doing art projects together when it’s too hot outside and of course having a lemonade stand! My son is 6 almost 7 years old. One of my most favorite summer memories is when he was about 2 years old we were going to go and watch fire works for the 4th of July. I had been talking about the 4th of July for a week or so trying to explain it to him. Telling him that it was America’s birthday. He was so intrigued about the America’s Birthday part and kept asking questions to the point that I realized he thought America was a person and that we were going to go to her birthday party. He was expecting cake at this birthday party so I went out and bought cupcakes so that we could have cake while watching the fire works on America’s Birthday. We still have cupcakes while watching our 4th of July fireworks to celebrate America’s Birthday.
