Work from Home Jobs: Tips & Opportunities
by Sara Sutton Fell, CEO of FlexJobs
Now more than ever, professional jobs are hiring that moms can do from home! Positions run across the board, including everything from administrative assistants all the way on up to CEOs. The fact of the matter is that allowing the option to work from home actually saves companies money, from overhead to real estate, but also from less employee turn over! Working from home does take discipline but removing the time it takes to drive to work during traffic hours alone saves several hours a week. With more and more small to large companies (IBM, AT&T, United Health Group, Cisco, etc.) jumping on board, the big question remains – how do you find the positions?
Ask Your Boss
First and foremost, if you already have a job, propose the option to work from home, even if it’s just 1 to 2 days a week. Demonstrate how you will track your time to put any fears to rest about your productivity. Be sure you are set up at home, including a computer, Internet and access to company email and file sharing, if that’s a fit.
Beware of Scammers
If a current employer isn’t an option, when looking for a new job, be wary of get rich quick schemes, too good to be true offers and other scams and ads. Make sure that you are corresponding with an actual company email address and/or phone number when applying and interviewing for a position, versus IM, a new tactic scammers are utilizing. Never give out personal information such as your bank account, social security number or send cash when applying for a job. It may seem like no brainers, but scammers can be masters at fooling people, including saying they need to deposit money into your account so you can purchase a company laptop or encouraging you to send money to purchase one.
