DCT opens season with wild and whimsical musical with an eco-friendly set

Dallas Children’s Theater begins its 2014-2015 season with Rapunzel! Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale (Sept. 19 – Oct 26), with a sensory friendly performance on Saturday, Oct 11. The scenery for this hilarious musical will be created using 90% recycled and repurposed materials. Enjoyed by ages 4 and up.

Features Princess Rapunzel being held alone in a tower by the wickedly fabulous Lady Za Za. Sir Roderick is on a quest to help Rapunzel take her rightful place as ruler of the kingdom. A wise old dragon, a hairstylist named Edgar, and a mysterious gypsy woman round out this goofy cast of characters directed by Nancy Schaeffer.

DCT’s Director of Production Bart McGeehon will be designing the set. As the creative and design process for Rapunzel! got underway, he decided to work with eco-friendly vendors and to design with recycled and repurposed materials.  McGeehon explains, “Theater already improves society in so many ways, but if we all can also get on board with improved environmental practices, our impact on society becomes that much greater. It’s as much about economy as ecology – if you use less you spend less. By combining the principles of the 3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), DCT can conserve energy and be economical at the same time.”

Tickets can be purchased by calling 214-740-0051 or online at www.dct.org.  Season subscription packages are still on sale.  Packages range from $60 for 4 plays up to $133 for entire season.  Season subscriptions provide the greatest value for DCT patrons.  Subscribers are given first preference of seating in the general admission house.

Opening Night Fun

The opening night of Rapunzel! is Friday September 19. All royal guests will be greeted in the Wyly Garden by our Knight and Princess Ponies and have a chance to pet and take pictures with them so the audience is encouraged to dress in their finest finery. Opening night activities will include creating a family crest; posing as Rapunzel, the Dragon Socrates, or both; taking a turn on the All-Star Puppet Theater and learning more from our community partner, Locks of Love. Of course, there is face painting and mini-cupcakes thanks to our friends at Sprinkles Cupcakes.
