Could Santa be a Professional Organizer?

Santa and His Big Red Bag

How to Store and Organize Toys

by Lorraine Brock

It has always amazed me how Santa maximizes the space in his red velveteen bag for the many toys he delivers on Christmas Eve. He has to have some great organizational skills (that I must be missing) to get enough toys for children all over the world in one red bag. Since what he leaves under our tree each year takes up more space in my home then in his red bag, I wonder if I should hire Santa to organize toys when the Christmas season is over?!

While Santa seems to have the gift delivery under control, finding space in your child’s room for all the new toys can be an Elf’s dilemma after Christmas. I suggest you take some action to organize toys now, or at the very least before your kids start opening gifts. Find time before Christmas to purge your child’s room of toys they no longer play with or just decide on a number of toys you are going to force yourself to give away. Think about the number of gifts your kids generally receive from family and friends, and use that number when you begin the purging process.

The perfect plan would be to complete this project with your child before the Holidays, but if there is too much kicking and screaming, and if the kids are on the verge of receiving a lump of coal in their stockings, then save the purging for after Christmas. Either way, be firm that for every new toy each child receives, an older toy must be given to a charity.

Another suggestion for lessening the chaos that comes with too many new toys is something I did with my own boys. Each year I allowed them to unwrap all of their gifts, but only open a few to play with. The rest would be stored in their closets and once a month they were allowed to pick one of their new gifts and it was like Christmas all over again. This fun idea kept the holiday excitement going all year and created less clean-up of toys each day.

No matter what plan you decide on to keep the Christmas new toy clutter under control, be sure to include a nightly clean-up routine for your child. This is something the kids should be doing every day of the year. Depending on how fast they normally do their jobs, have them stop playtime 30-45 minutes before bedtime each night to clean up their areas. You’ve probably heard the saying from one of the Spider-Man movies, “With great power comes great responsibilities”. Well, with a great number of toys comes a great clean-up plan.

One thing to remember is that the recipient of the new toys should also be the one to pick them up each night. In fact, Santa himself might have some helpful advice on how he keeps his little elves organized as well. For a jolly, old man with amazing organizational skills who delivers millions of toys on one special night, I just have to believe he has advice for the few dozen toys you receive in your home. If you can, stay up late on Christmas Eve, wait for his arrival, and just ask!
