Is Your Mom a Zombie? Parents and Sleep Deprivation!

I love this infographic from showing the dangers of sleep deprivation! Too funny. I know there are days when I feel like a zombie and I also know I drink way too much caffeine, but I would be even more of a zombie without it.

I appreciate sharing this useful information and reminders to parents to get some sleep, but it’s not always easy is it, especially when kids are young or there is time change like we just had. Falling back should not mean never falling asleep!, a digital resource for online education from kindergarten to graduate school, recently launched “Help, My Parents are Zombies!” an infographic that focuses on the importance of sleep in a parent’s daily routine.  The infographic shows that parents get less sleep than similar individuals who don’t have kids, something that can cause interruption in daily activity such as mood swings and impaired memory.  The infographic highlights information from expert sources including the FDA, and Harvard University.

“Sometimes we parents get so caught up in our responsibilities that we don’t even realize how little sleep we’re getting,” said Seth Restaino, spokesperson.  “Unfortunately this can also come with some dangerous risks when it comes to things like driving.”

In fact, 100,000 automobile accidents happen each year as a result of people falling asleep at the wheel.   To avoid being a part of this statistic, many adults turn to coffee for an energy boost.  However, what they don’t realize is that coffee can end up hurting their ability to sleep. As the infographic explains, the body takes between eight and 10 hours to break down the majority of the caffeine in a single five ounce cup of coffee, so timing one’s coffee or caffeine consumption can be important.

“We hope this not only makes parents more aware of the dangers of losing sleep, but that they also follow the tips to avoid it,” said Restaino.  “Speaking for myself, I’ll be cutting out my late afternoon coffee and going to sleep earlier, right around when my one-month-old does.”
