Get Organized! Picks Top 10 Organizing Products for 2015
by Lorraine Brock
Are you ready to get organized? Organizing is a process that includes planning a space that may contain items of various shapes and sizes. Our GO team keeps up with current trends and know what products are best in any organizing situation. It’s time to share our annual Top 10 Organizing Products List recommended by our own professional organizers. The items are not in any particular order, and have been tested in the homes of our organizers and their clients.
1. Melissa, who juggles two different roles at Get Organized says, “Mine is any cross-cut shredder, as it eliminates spreading of personal information to help prevent identity theft.” She would know, as she uses her shredder in her role with IT organization including digital paper management, photos, file structures, or syncing, and handling Get Organized! financials. While she does not have a specific shredder to recommend, you can go to BestShredderReviews.com and compare. Keep in mind when shopping for a shredder to check for how many pages it shreds at one time and if it can shred staples and destroy DVDs and CDs.
2. Need a little extra shelf space in a closet or garage? Dorrie, our organizer who works so well with seniors downsizing to smaller spaces, recommends the Blue Hawk shelving at Lowe’s®. The shelving comes in different depths and various heights, allowing you to fit it to your space. Use it in a coat closet to get items off the floor or to make odd garage spaces more functional. No installation is needed. Measure your space and buy the size to fit under existing shelves or hanging bars in a closet. The organizing possibilities are endless.
3. Kym, our pro building and installing organizer, says to get addicted to labeling with a Dymo Label Maker. She says, “I bought mine from Walmart for less than $25.” Kym knows about tackling large projects, as she rebuilt her home after a devastating tornado a few years ago. A labeler allows you to easily retrieve items stored in containers, boxes, or cabinets in any area of your home.
4. Another product that Kym likes is IKEA®’s Pluggis system. “A 7-piece container set with rail that I use to make iPad/tablet/cell phone charging stations,” says Kym. This system can also be used above a desk or area in the kitchen for collecting mail.
5. Spice up your kitchen with the Spicy Shelf™ Stackable Organizer. “I really like the way it works in my home and now for a client who bought them for her crazy amount of spices and medicine,” says GO organizer Sarah. If you are looking for someone to change your disorganized and cluttered home and life, Sarah is your gal. She is a great teacher and works with clients to organize their physical spaces and shares time management strategies too.
6. Don’t get boxed in with your clutter. Susan says, “Purchase “men’s shoe boxes from The Container Store®. What a great size it is! With a nicely fitting top it is sized to keep so many things protected, visible, and dust free. It stacks wonderfully, takes labeling very well, and makes organizing easy for papers, toiletries, travel items, yarn, paint supplies, craft items of all kinds,…and the list goes on.” If you have a craft room that needs organizing, Susan can make your area function with style. I know, as I have seen her beautifully organized Stamping Up room.
7. Get organized for Christmas next year with this TreeKeeper® Tissue and Gift Bag Storage Bag. Karla knows Christmas storage as she has experience with her own home and as one of our Christmas decorating services specialists. She has a passion for decorating and gift wrapping. Karla says, “Organize gift bags, tags, tissue, scissors, and ribbon, and keep it from wrinkling so you can reuse next year.” (Note: this does not hold rolls of wrapping paper.)
8. Now we come to MY favorite organizing tools for 2015. Most of the products on this list are found through actual client product research, and this one is no exception. The Expandable Undersink Organizer found at The Container Store® maximizes space and allows you to see everything you have stored in a normally cluttered and hidden space. I also like the ability to place the pull-out drawers and shelves where you want them based on the piping under your sink. It can be customized to your space.
9. My favorite garage organizing products is one that will keep you organized and your hands clean. It is a wall mount paper towel holder. It can be stuck on garage refrigerator doors or on a wall in the garage. Keeping paper towels in the garage saves you time when working on outdoor projects or car maintenance. Be sure to decide where the holder will be placed before buying one at most discount stores. Some stick on certain surfaces with adhesive tape, some have magnets, while others have hardware included to install on walls, shelves, or in cabinets.
10. My last recommended organizing product is the Organizer IKEA® PS fabric shelf. While I have not used this personally, every time I see it, I think this would be a great solution for a laundry room to sort folded clothes for the kids. It comes in black or white and the shelves can be removed if you choose to use it as extra hanging space. Casters allow it to roll to any location, and a handle in back makes the move a snap. As of writing this article, it was marked down at IKEA® for only $17.99, which is a must buy.
I hope you find our picks for 2015 meet an organizational need in your life. Our recommendations are based not only on our experience while organizing our clients, but also our knowledge of the function a product may bring to a particular space. We wish you and yours a new year cluttered with joy and organized with fun.
