Earlier today, I was explaining to someone how inspired I was feeling about the wonderful outpouring of support for our neighbors in Houston and coastal Texas areas. In the course of the discussion, I was reminded that we all deal differently with crisis in our lives. Those impacted by Hurricane Harvey need the basics and financial support for sure, but they also need emotional support, particularly if they have kids. Just imagine how parents must feel having to be displaced from their homes, schools, businesses and jobs, but, on top of that, having to take care of and entertain their kids too.

My favorite thing about our amazing Texas weather is dining “alfresco”. Perhaps it is my Oregon roots, but I have always been a big fan of the patio dining experience.

A good patio must have a relaxed atmosphere, aesthetically appealing decor and reasonably priced good food and drinks. Since having kiddos 10 years ago, my list has now grown to include kid friendly patios.

As families prepare to head back to school, it is important to familiarize parents and children with some potentially lifesaving safety tips. Buses and bicycles are two of the most commonly used forms of transportation amongst children commuting to and from school. Dr. David Arai, emergency medicine physician on the medical staff at Centennial Medical Center in Frisco, Texas, answers some questions about back-to-school bike and bus safety.

Q: What are some of the most common injuries seen in bike-related accidents?

We see a significant amount of internal injuries, like bleeding from the liver or other internal organs and ruptured spleens. Since children and teenagers have enlarged spleens in general, the risk of damage to this organ is greater. Head injuries and broken bones are common as well, and if a bone such as a rib is broken, children run the risk of puncturing a lung.
